BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The No. 2 seed Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (25-7, 5-1 CWPA West) reeled off nine consecutive goals to open play against No. 7 seed Salem International en route to a 16-3 victory at the CWPA Western Division Championship.
The victory sets up a semifinal clash with No. 3 seed Michigan at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Top-seeded Maryland and No. 4 seed Hartwick are matched up in the opposite semifinal at 4:30 p.m.
The Hoosiers are one win away from tying the IU single-season school record of 26 wins, set by the 1998, 2003, and 2011 squads.
Ten Hoosiers found the back of the net with freshman Summer Creighton leading the way, notching a hat trick, to go along with a pair of steals. The freshman trio of Alexis Jones, Devon Peterson, and Alynn Reade, along with sophomore Amanda Redfern, scored two goals apiece. Freshman Katie Contreras, sophomore Shae Fournier, and sophomore Meghan Lappan had one score each.
Senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff made her 30th start of the year and grabbed a save in one quarter of action. Freshman Jojo White came on to play the second and third periods, picking up a trio of stops. Junior Liza Dernehl saw her first action of the 2012 campaign, making a save during the fourth quarter.
Indiana led 11-0 by the 2:25 mark of the second period after a blistering start. Salem International got on the board late in the second stanza and the Hoosiers had an 11-1 lead at the half.
The double-digit scoring effort for Indiana marks the 12th of the season.
The Cream and Crimson kept the momentum into the third period, scoring three straight goals to take a 14-1 edge into the fourth.
