Hoosiers Pass First Test of the CWPA Eastern Championships
April 26, 2013
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana water polo team advanced past their first round opponent Bucknell 12-3 in their opening match of the CWPA Eastern Championship at the Canham Natatorium at the University of Michigan.
Junior Shae Fournier was named player of the match, a credit to her game-high four goals, one assist, and two field blocks.
Fournier scored the initial goal of the match off the assist from freshman Candyce Schroeder. Goals from Rebecca Gerrity, Meghan Lappan, and a second from Fournier made the score jump quickly to 4-0 before the Bison could come back and score on the power play.
Colleen McNaught scored almost immediately after on one of only three 6-on-5 opportunities IU had all match. Fournier tacked on a third goal, and the Hoosiers headed into halftime with a 6-1 lead.
Candyce Schroeder set a new career high with three assists, finding the open player almost immediately. She also had an impressive backhand goal to add on to the Hoosiers lead.
The Bison scored twice more on power plays, making their total 3 points on the match.
Redshirt senior Jakie Kohli was able to find the back of the net twice, mostly created off her excellent defense. Kohli's four steals were also a game high. Jakie now only needs five goals before moving into first on Indiana's all-time goals scored list.
Bucknell was awarded another scoring opportunity on a 5-meter late in the third quarter, but First Team All-Conference goalie Jessica Gaudreault swatted it away. Gaudreault had eight saves in three quarters before fellow freshman Mary Campbell took over in the goal. Campbell had five saves in the fourth quarter.
Indiana will face the winner of Brown vs Michigan at 6:00 pm EST tomorrow evening.
