PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The No. 3 seed Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (26-9) fell in the quarterfinals of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship to No. 6 seed Brown, 5-4, after giving up the lone fourth period goal to the Bears with 3:22 remaining.
The Hoosiers were led in scoring by sophomore Shae Fournier and freshman Colleen McNaught, each notching a pair of goals.
Senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff had seven saves and three steals in 32 minutes of action.
The first quarter was a struggle on the offensive end for both squads, as no goals were converted in the opening period.
Brown got on the board first with a long-range goal at the 5:26 mark of the second quarter.
McNaught responded for the Hoosiers with a perimeter goal of her own, coming on an assist by freshman Shelby Taylor to tie things up. McNaught's goal came after the three previous IU attempts just missed by hitting bar-out.
Both offenses picked up in the third, with each squad scoring a trio of goals, including a combined four goals on four consecutive possessions.
After a Brown goal early in the period, Fournier came up with perimeter score after Taylor's second helper of the game.
The Bears countered with a goal on the next trip to go up 3-2 with 5:46 to play in the third.
McNaught and Fournier answered back for the Hoosiers with their second goals to give Indiana its first lead of the contest at 4-3 late in the third, but the momentum was stopped with a Brown power play strike with 1:02 to go in quarter to knot things up.
Brown regained the lead near the midway point of the fourth period, lofting a high lob past Wyckoff.
Fournier's shot on the final Indiana possession sailed high and the Bears controlled the ball for the remainder of the game.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against the loser of the Princeton-Harvard matchup.
