Hoosiers Lose Heartbreaker to Michigan Indiana falls short of an NCAA berth with their 6-5 loss to the Wolverines.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The top seeded Indiana water polo team lost a heartbreaking match 6-5 in the semi-final against Michigan on two late goals in the fourth quarter. Despite being ahead the majority of the match, IU didn't score in the fourth quarter and barely missed the championship game at the Cnaham Natatorium.
Indiana scored the first two goals of the match before Michigan was able to put up a point at the end of the first quarter. The first came from Rebecca Gerrity of the assist from freshman Candyce Schroeder. The second was a bullet from sophomore Colleen McNaught off the one-touch pass from Jakie Kohli.
Michigan scored two more quick goals to pull ahead at the beginning of the second quarter, but the lead didn't stand for long. Redshirt senior Jakie Kohli scored her first goal of the match, and 63 on the season, before Shelby Taylor netted another to give the Hoosiers a 4-3 lead at the half.
Center Candyce Schroeder scored Indiana's final goal of the match after working her way around several defenders in the middle. This gave the Hoosiers a 5-3 lead early in the third.
The Wolverines scored on a drawn exclusion and then added two more late in the fourth. IU had one final shot to tie it up with the ball in their hands and 13 seconds on the clock, but they just couldn't get the goal.
Goalie Jessica Gaudreult played well with nine saves on 28 shot attempts.
Michigan advances to the Championship match and IU will play for third and fourth against Hartwick tomorrow at 3:00 pm EST.
