Indiana Ends Season on a High Note, Places Third in the CWPA Eastern Finals.
April 28, 2013
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana water polo team finished the 2013 season with a 14-9 win over Hartwick. That win placed the Hoosiers third at the CWPA Eastern Finals at the Canham Natatorium at the University of Michigan.
Unfortunatly for Indiana, the season ending means saying good bye to one of the all-time greats to ever put on an Hoosier suit- Jakie Kohli. Kohli finished her career at IU just three goals shy of the all-time scoring record. With 64 goals on the season, Kohli finished with 244 goals for her career. The school record is held by Kristin Stanford with 246. Kohli is also second all-time at IU in career steals with 276, and third in career assists with 134.
Freshman Candyce Schroeder scored the opening goal of the match on a power play. Schroeder matched a career high with three goals on the match; she also had a huge effect on the game by drawing five exclusions on the Seahawks. On their eight total 6-on-5 opportunities, IU was able to score on five of them.
Hartwick took full advantage of their power play opportunities as well. They scored on a double exclusion to close the scoring gap to one before two back-to-back goals and a field block from sophomore Summer Creighton pushed the Hoosiers on top for good.
Candyce Schroeder, Shae Fournier, and Rebecca Gerrity each had three goals on the match. Summer Creighton added two points, and Kohli, Shelby Taylor, and freshman Hallie Lindsey scored one goal apiece.
Goalie Jessica Gaudreault, who was named player of the match, had 11 saves, two steals, and one assist in the first three quarters before Mary Campbell took over. Campbell had two saves on nine shot attempts in the fourth quarter.
IU finished the 2013 season with an over-all season record of 21-13 (8-3).
