Hoosiers Make Final Field of Eight, Advance to the NCAA Finals in Los Angeles

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 8 Indiana water polo team defeated ninth-seed Wagner College 11-6 to advance to the NCAA Finals in Los Angeles Calif. May 9-11. Four goals from senior Shae Fournier and three from Rebecca Gerrity spurred the Hoosier offense to lead the team to their 3rd NCAA appearance in school history.
Junior Rebecca Gerrity started the Hoosiers off right with a goal to the corner in front of Indiana's home crowd.
Wagner quickly went on the offensive attack, taking a 5-2 shot advantage. Goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreault was able to keep the Seahawks off the board till halfway through the first, raking up three quick saves, nine over-all.
Wagner was able to muscle their way in the middle and dodge Gaudreault's outstretched arms to tie the score at 1-1 before a skip-shot from Fournier put Indiana back on top, ending the first quarter with a 2-1 Hoosier lead.
Shelby Taylor got the ball to freshman Ellie Stott who netted the ball to open the second quarter. Wagner was able to score two more balls in the second, but an offensive spurt from Gerrity, Fournier, and Colleen McNaught gave Indiana a halftime lead of 6-4.
The Hoosiers never looked back. Fournier, Indiana's all-time leading scorer netted two more goals off penalty shots while picking up three steals. Gerrity added a third goal, junior Colleen McNaught scored twice, and senior Meghan Lappan added the final tally for Indiana.
Indiana, an eight seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, will head to Los Angeles to compete for the rest of the championships. The Hoosiers will face No. 1 Stanford to kick off the tournament on May 9.
