Canadian National Team Gets Edged Out in First Canada Cup Game Against Australia.
Dec. 4, 2013
GATINEAU, Quebec. - The second game on the schedule of the 2013 Canada Cup proved to be a very exciting one as the Australian National Team held on tight in the final seconds to secure a victory over Team Canada. The 9-8 victory pushed Australia to (2-0) in the early stages of the round robin international tournament in Gatineau, Quebec from December 2-8.
Canada (0-1) used their defense to hold off a powerful Aussie attack in the first quarter of the match. The Canadian offense was able to put in two goals by the second half, but Australia matched, sending the ladies into halftime with a 2-2 tie.
The start of the third quarter saw Canada jump out to a 5-3 lead, but Australia was able to power right back, bringing the score to within one, and finishing the third quarter down 6-5.
The back-and-fourth battle continued through the final quarter leaving both teams tied with only 10 seconds remaining. Right as the clock was expiring, however, Australia's Rowena Webster was able to put in one final goal to give the victory to the Aussies.
"We are actually playing a lot of young athletes this week and it is great to be able to give them some significant experience. I am pleased with how we played on the defense and counter attack. It was a close game," said Canadian head coach Guy Baker.
