Canada Earns First Victory of Holiday Cup Against Australia, Falls to the Netherlands

SANTA ANA, Calif. - Indiana's Jessica Gaudreault was able to secure a victory for the Canadian National Team in their final match of the 2013 Holiday Cup in Santa Ana, Calif. Canada posted a 8-7 win over Australia on Sunday following a 10-5 loss to the Netherlands the night before.
Canada once again started strong in their late night match against the Netherlands on Saturday, lead 3-2 in the first quarter, and headed into the locker room with a 4-4 time at the half. But as has been the story all tournament, one bad quarter lead to their demise. The Netherlands posted four goals in the final period compared to Canada's one, and the Canadians dropped to 0-4 with a final score of 10-5 in favor of The Netherlands. Hoosier Jessica Gaudreault finished with eight saves in the match.
Determined not to go winless, Canada knew that consistent play was the key to a victory over Australia. Team Canada recorded exactly two goals in all four quarters against the Aussies and pulled off key defensive stops in the final quarter to earn an 8-7 victory in their final event of the Holiday Cup.
Next up following the Holliday Cup will be the women and men's qualifier for the 2014 FINA World Cup. The American women will host Canada for a three game series at Foothill High School from Dec. 17th-19th.
