Community Joins Hoosiers in IU Community 5K
Sept. 1, 2006
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's cross country team kicked off the 2006 campaign with the third annual IU Community 5K Run Friday, Sept. 1.
With 75 men and women participating in the combined race, the focus was on the Bloomington running community and their participation in the event. The annual meet gives anyone from the community a chance to run with the Hoosiers and take their shot on one of the most difficult cross country courses in the state.
"This is a fun event to run," three-time participant Mark Bauman said. "It is a challenging course to run. When you are running it you ask yourself, `why am I doing this?' After you get done though, you know why you do it."
"It is a fun course to run," local resident Mary Jane Johnson said. "This is my second year running in the event, I enjoy it."
With a solid local turnout and participants from the University of Louisville, the IU Community 5K Run should continue to a fourth year next season.
Sophomore Stephanie Greer led the Hoosiers on the women's side with a time a 19:16.00. She was followed by redshirt sophomore Kristina Trcka (19:31.00), junior Maura Ratcliff (20:30.00), junior Jackie Davis (20:43.00), and redshirt freshman Bliss Cook (21:02.00).
Louisville's Tarah McKay clocked a time of 18:31.00 to finish as the women's leader in the combined race.
The Hoosiers get back into action next week when they host the Indiana Open on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. at the IU Cross Country Championship Course.
