Gall Takes Second at Indiana Open
Sept. 9, 2006
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's cross country team kicked off the 2006 campaign by hosing the Indiana Open on Saturday, Sept. 9. Several teams from around the state participated, as well as Big Ten rivals Michigan and Purdue.
Finishing first for the Hoosiers and second overall was senior All-American Jessica Gall with a time of 17:40 for the 5K race. Gall's time tied her career-best and was the sixth fastest time on the IU course. Rounding out the top ten for IU were senior Lindsay Hattendorf (18:10, 5th) and sophomore Wendi Robinson (18:18, 7th).
Also finishing for Indiana was sophomore Stephanie Greer (18:40, 11th), freshman Kellee Lemcke (19:01, 16th), sophomore Ashley Sommer (19:14, 18th), sophomore Kristina Trcka (19:17, 20th), junior Maura Ratcliff (19:54, 29th), freshman Bliss Cook (20:30, 37th) and freshman Jackie Davis (20:32, 38th).
Indiana coach Judy Wilson was pleased with the early results.
"I thought it went pretty well," Wilson said. "It heated up a little out here today but I think they ran pretty well for this time of year. With this course, if you go out to hard you are going to pay later. We told the girls to run steady and patient."
Seniors Hattendorf and Gall we also happy with the team's early season performance.
"We didn't want to go out there and strain," Hattendorf said. "It was good to have some Big Ten teams out there today to compare where we are and where they are at this point in the season."
"This is our first real competition with the whole team," Gall said. "It is good to get us motivated for the rest of the season."
The Hoosiers will be back action when they visit Terre Haute, Ind., the site of the 2006 NCAA Championships, for the Indiana Intercollegiates on Sept. 15.
