BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--The Indiana University men's and women's cross country teams have finalized their 2005 schedule, head cross country coaches Robert Chapman and Judy Wilson announced on Thursday. The Hoosiers will host three meets in the upcoming season, including the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet on Saturday, Nov. 12. The NCAA Regional meet will be a huge event for Indiana, as some of the nation's top talent will compete in Bloomington. The Hoosier facilities have been put to good use over the years as they have hosted four NCAA Championships (1974, 1982, 1992, 1999), the most of any other school since 1974.

IU kicks off its season with back-to-back home meets, the IU Community 5k on Friday, Sept. 2, and the annual Indiana Intercollegiates on Friday, Sept. 16. The IU Community race will be open to the public. Registration information will be available on iuhoosiers.com as the date approaches.

The Hoosiers then hit the road to run in various meets throughout the Midwest. The women's first race on the road will be at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., on Saturday, Sept. 24, while the men will compete at the Loyola Invitational in Chicago, Ill., Saturday, Oct. 1.

For the second-straight year, Pre-NCAA's (Oct. 15) and the NCAA Championship (Nov. 21) will be held at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind. Indiana will also compete for Big Ten titles at this year's Big Ten Championship, which will be held in Minneapolis, Minn., on Oct. 30.

With six seniors on the '05 roster, including two-time All-American Sean Jefferson, the men's cross country team will look to improve on their 19thplace finish at the NCAA Championship this past season. The Hoosiers will be set when it comes to competing at the championship level as IU's top five runners have made a total of 21 NCAA appearances in cross country, indoor and outdoor track combined.

Chapman is looking forward to what potentially could be a great season for the Hoosiers.

"Our seniors have put in so much hard work over the years," said Chapman. "I hope their final season of cross country will be their best one yet. I am also looking forward to working with our younger guys to get them fit and ready to compete."

The IU women have a wealth of experience back as well, as five of its top six runners return for 2005. All-American Jessica Gall, the Hoosiers' top runner last season, as well as Kelly Siefker, Kristin Whitezell, Lindsay Hattendorf, Larra Overton, all who have at least two years of national meet experience will make up the core of the Hoosiers' talent.

After coming up a little short of the team's goals in 2004, Wilson sees the Hoosiers in a solid position to be a top-three team in the Big Ten and top-10 team in the nation.

"We always want our athletes to set the bar high for team success," said Wilson. "We return many of athletes who have made great improvement over the course of their time here. This could be the year that we see them step up and help us place higher at Big Tens and NCAAs."
