Bloomington, Ind - The Women's Cross Country team recently returned from their annual preseason training camp held at Indiana Dunes.
At the beginning of each season the team spends five days at the dunes to train for their upcoming season. This year thirteen women thought to be in a strong position to contribute to the team for the 2003 season were taken by head coach Judy Wilson.
Coach Wilson had this to say about the experience. "We had a solid week with about 5-6 of our runners at 55+ miles. Our big "dune" workout went very well as it is a challenge running in the sand and finishing each interval slightly uphill. I think the team comes away from this trip a little more in tune with what our mission is, and also more aware of what they need to do to help the team."
The training camp is in preparation for the upcoming season, which ,for the Hoosiers, begins this Friday, August 29.
"We aren't running a couple of people (this Friday) for various reasons. Becky and Jess are working their way back from some injuries, and I wanted to wait a few weeks before we racce Kelly Siefker who was in Barbados this past July for the Jr. Pan Am's.
"I'm excited to see where some people are right nonw, especially the ones who weren't necessarily in our top five from last year. There are 4-5 runners who we are counting on to move closer to our top 5. Last year, we had a big gap between 5 and 6. Hopefully, we can close that up a bit. We do have a lot of the same people from last year, but it's a different team altogether."
The Hoosiers look forward to opening the 2003 season at the Indiana Open this Friday at the IU Cross Country Course. Indiana will compete against Huntington, South Florida, Louisville and Wisconsin-Green Bay.
