BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-The Indiana University men's and women's cross country teams kicked off the 2005 season with a community 5K run Friday Sept. 2 at the IU cross country course. A total of 66 runners participated in the event, including several members of the Bloomington community. For the men, Jon Von Letscher of the University of Texas was the first place finisher with a time of 16:17. On the women's side, Indiana's own Larra Overton crossed the finish line first in 19:04.

Members of the community enjoyed running the course in 80 plus degree temperatures. Father and son Rick and Douglas Killion of Bloomington were both in attendance and said they enjoyed being a part of the community run the Hoosiers put on.

"We enjoy events like this and run them when we can," Rick said. "The last time we did something like this was last October."

Indiana head coach Judy Wilson was pleased with the turnout.

"It was good to see all these people come out and run on our course," Wilson said. "Next year we want to see triple the amount of people come out and run. All in all, it was a good day and I think everyone had fun."

The Hoosiers return to action on Sept. 16 when they host the Indiana Intercollegiates on the IU Cross Country Course. Race time is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
