Bloomington, IN - Coach Judy Wilson has a dual objective for sending four runners - freshmen Kelly Siefker, Larra Overton and Valerie Rego and sophomore Allison Miller - to compete at the Purdue Open this weekend.
" It will help the four of them get some needed meet experience, and our while team is going up to get a workout in on their course," Wilson said, referring to the site of the Nov. 3 Big Ten Championships.
This will be the Hoosiers' first meet action since the Aug. 30 Indiana Open. The entire team returns to action at the Sept. 20 Indiana Intercollegiates. While some coaches dislike such long breaks between meets, Wilson sees it as a blessing in disguise.
"We've got some girls nicked up, fighting the bug, a little under the weather," she said. "This gives us some time to rest up."
Wilson said that for the past week, she has been working her team in three groups between five and seven runners each. This allows her to tailor her workouts more to her runners' specific needs.
"Especially with the unusually warm weather this time of year, we have some runners who don't do as well in the hear," she said. "So, we can tone down the mileage on those runners and still keep them in shape."
