Gall Named Big Ten AOW (9/21/04)
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After outrunning Ball State's Jill Scully to the finish line for an eight-second victory to win the Indiana Intercollegiate title in 17:40, sophomore Jessica Gall was chosen, along with Michigan State freshman Danette Doetzel, as the co-Big Ten Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.
"It is a great honor," Gall said. "I wasn't expecting either of the awards. They show that a lot of the hard work I've put in is starting to pay off. Although the recognition is great right now, I am maintaining focus on the Big Ten, regional and national meets."
The stellar sophomore becomes the first member of Head Coach Judy Wilson's squad to earn the conference's weekly honor this fall by notching her second career award after leading the Hoosiers to a one-point triumph over Purdue en route to back-to-back Indiana Intercollegiate titles.
"It was great to get the team win," Gall said. "We initially thought we had lost,
but they came on the bus and told us we won - it was that close. It was uplifting to pull out that victory. It is the first step along the way for us. We will just keep training hard and doing what we do for the bigger meets."
Gall's previous conference nod came after being the top IU finisher at the Indiana Open with an 18:32 clocking in the 5K event.
"Jessica is just very talented," Wilson said. "She has been able to string together a solid six to eight months of training now. These meets just started off a good season for her."
Next up, the Cream and Crimson travel to Cary, N.C., on Oct. 1 for the Great American Cross Country Festival at 4:45 p.m.
