    Women Use Upcoming Weeks to Prepare for Pre-NCAA's

    The Hoosiers return to their home state of Indiana after the weekend's Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota. The women turned in their first 6K times of the season and took 13th amongst a field of 29 teams, beating out Purdue and Nebraska, both of whom had received votes in recent national polls. They will be looking in the next weeks of training to improve individually in order to close gaps, making their pack even more dominant for crucial meets in October such as the Pre-NCAA meet and the Big Ten Championship. In not competing in the Indiana State Invitational this weekend, the women can log two weeks of solid training and recover well after the relatively flat race to be held at Notre Dame before heading into Pre-NCAA's.

    The men took 17th in a field of 31 at the Griak, beating out Butler who was listed among vote receivers in national rankings. With sophomore Chad Andrews battling sickness and senior Chris Ekman coming off of injury, the majority of the men will use the time in the next weeks to regain health and prepare for the Notre Dame Invitational and Pre-NCAA Invitational held in the beginning of October.

    However, three Hoosier athletes will represent Indiana this weekend: sophomores Matt Sweetman and Nathan Purcell will gain racing experience at Indiana State while senior Dan Billish will be travelling individually to the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago.

    The Loyola Invitational will be held along the shores of Lake Michigan on Montrose Avenue Beach in Chicago. Billish will `toe the line' at 11:00 a.m. for the Men's 8K race. The Indiana State Invitational will be held on the LaVern Gibson Golf Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Men's 8K kicks off at 11:15 a.m. following the Women's 5K.

    Competition Query
    Fifth-year senior Dan Billish will return to his hometown of Chicago, Illinois to compete in the Loyola Lakefront Invitational. The meet will feature Division I competition from Ball State, Buffalo, Chicago State, DePaul, Drake, Illinois-Chicago, Illinois Tech, select athletes from IUPUI, Loyola, Marshall, Marquette, Missouri, Oakland, and Valparaiso.
    The Indiana State Invitational will host a number of teams on the men's side including Air Force, Bradley, Illinois State, IPFW, select athletes from IUPUI, N. Arizona, Ohio State, Ohio University, and Southern Illinois. The Iowa Hawkeyes will also bring a men's team.

    Head of the Hoosiers
    Dr. Robert Chapman begins his third season as Head Men's Cross Country Coach at Indiana University. Last season, under Chapman's guidance, the Hoosiers jumped five spots in the Big Ten standings. One has to go back to 1993 to see the last time a team made such an improvement from one season to the next at the Big Ten Cross Country Championship. With his first recruiting class being one of the nation's best and the most recent containing the same grade of talent, Chapman is looking towards even greater success in 2000.

    Judy Bogenschutz also begins her third season as Head Women's Cross Country Coach at Indiana University. In the fall of 1999, Bogenschutz led the squad to it's making the largest single improvement by any team at the Big Ten Cross Country Championship since 1994. A handful of her distance runners were factors in the Indiana Women's Track and Field team's undefeated 2000 seasons and Indoor and Outdoor Big Ten Championship team titles. Bogenschutz looks for that success to carry over into the fall.

    Men's Coach Dr. Robert Chapman: "These three athletes [Dan Billish, Matt Sweetman, and Nathan Purcell] did not run in the Griak meet last week, so we will see where they stand in competition this weekend. Purcell is beginning to progress nicely after a late summer injury and Sweetman is exhibiting real potential. With Billish being a Chicago native and a fifth-year senior who has contributed a great deal to our program, I truly wanted to give him the opportunity to run in his hometown. The rest of the team will use this time to prepare primarily for the Pre-NCAA meet on October 14th."

    Women's Coach Judy Bogenschutz: "Our strategy for this week is to get in two solid weeks of training before heading into the Pre-NCAA meet. This is potentially the best women's team since 1991. We have to go out and prove that and Pre-NCAA's is where it must be done. The Notre Dame Invitational is a relatively flat course from which our team will recover very well and should look to come out the following week ready to go."

    Three Hoosiers will represent Indiana Men's Cross Country this weekend.

    Thrillish Billish
    Fifth-year senior Dan Billish opened the 2000 season with an impressive 7K time of 24:26.72 (5:37 per mile). In the week following, Billish was seventh for his team (8K-26:22.70) when they claimed the Indiana Intercollegiates team title on thier home course. While he did not compete in the Griak meet in Minnesota, his time at Intercollegiates ranks fourth among his career 8K bests. In the pursuit of his individual goals, Billish hopes to assist his teammates in achieving their set team goals of winning a Big Ten title and qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

    "In all of my years here, I have never run within two hours of my home and therefore, no one from my hometown, from my family, my friends, my high school coach-no one has seen me run. When I found out we were off this weekend, that was the first thing I talked to Coach Chapman about, was being able to run at the Loyola meet. I'm very excited about it. My family and friends will be there; I've worked a lot of camps and the campers are coming and my high school team is actually running in the race so I will get to see my old coach. Suiting up in an Indiana uniform and showing what I've accomplished since I've been here is an honor to me." -Dan Billish

    Out of the Gate Nate
    Sophomore Nathan Purcell is entering his first year of collegiate competition after redshirting his freshman year. While Purcell was temporarily set back due to a late summer injury, he has steadily progressed and will look to continue that trend so that he may be prepared to support his team in upcoming meets such as the Pre-NCAA in early October.
    At the Sam Bell Invitational 7K, Purcell ran a 5:38 per mile average to finish with a time of 24:30.82. In the Indiana Intercollegiates 8K, Purcell crossed the line in 26:30.20.

    "While I had a great summer of training, I was set back about four weeks of training due to an injury. While I was cross-training on a bicycle and the trainers worked and got me healthy, I was still far behind from where I wanted to be in the Sam Bell Invitational. At Intercollegiates, I definitely felt stronger and that was two weeks ago so, at ISU, I want to gauge where I am. Hopefully, I'll put in a decent time and will be able to break back into the lineup for the Notre Dame Invitational."

    Looking for a Sweet Performance
    Former redshirt freshman and sophomore teammate Matt Sweetman will join Purcell at the Indiana State Invitational in Terre Haute. Sweetman finished third among the Hoosiers competing in the Sam Bell 7K with a time of 23:40.80 (5:26 per mile average). In the Open 8K of the Indiana Intercollegiates, Sweetman crossed the line in 26:22.40.

    "I began the 2000 season primarily focusing on the steeplechase in outdoor track and using cross country as preparation for that. My summer training went really well and I was able to get myself into the right frame of mind. Lately, that work has been paying off and I have been doing very well in workouts so I really want to see what I can do. I want to keep looking ahead and run in as many meets as possible."
