Auburn, AL - The No. 34 Indiana women's cross country team finished second at the 32-team 5K Auburn Invitational Friday afternoon at the Indian Pines Cross Country Course.

Mississippi State captured the team title with 107 points, followed by Indiana with 111. Auburn was third with 116, followed by Purdue (134), Coastal Carolina (145), Georgia Tech (195), Belmont (199), Western Kentucky (235), Tulane (238) and Samford (265) round out the top 10.

Indiana views the 2003 season as a step-by-step approach to the Big Ten Championships (Nov. 2 in Iowa City), and the NCAA Championships (Nov. 24 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa). According to head coach Judy Wilson, her team is right on course.

"The course was slow because it was rainy and wet, and they ran the men's race before ours," Wilson said. "We ran okay. Audrey (Giesler, who finished fifth in 17:50.6) and Mindy (Peterson, who placed 11th in 18:34.52) ran well. We're moving in the right direction, and this was a good step towards pre-nationals (Oct. 18 in Cedar Rapids)."

The Hoosiers were disappointed with their last effort, a 15th place finish at the Sept. 27 Roy Griak Invitational. They vowed to make a change at Auburn.

"This was definitely more positive because we went out with a more goal-oriented strategy," Peterson said. "For me, I felt comfortable and confident the first mile and tried to stay in the same position the whole race."

After Giesler and Peterson, freshman Kristin Whitezell was 26th (18:51.41), Kelly Siefker was 29th (18:56.74) and Julie Shields was 46th (19:23.15).
