Terre Haute, IN - From Indiana head coach Judy Wilson's perspective, there was good news and bad news at the Oct. 19 Pre-NCAA 6K Meet.
"Our top five runners did very well," Wilson said, referring to the corp that led the Hoosiers to an eighth place finish in the 38-team field at the Vern Gibson Course, which will also be the site of the Nov. 25 NCAA Championship. "On the flip side, there is a huge gap between our fifth and sixth runners and fifth and seventh runners. We can't have that type of gap in big meets like this."
Mindy Peterson was among the top three runners at the 1K point, and she finished 30th with a time of 21:16. Freshman Jessica Gall posted personal-bests at the 1K, 4K and 5K points en route to a 38th place overall finish (21:27). Audrey Giesler (44th, 21:30), Becky Obrecht (54th, 21:39) and Lindsay Hattendorf (73rd, 21:52) rounded out the Hoosier scoring.
"I am really happy for all the girls, but especially Jessica," Wilson said. "I told her that this was a big meet, and she just had to get after it. She tends to overthink, and you can't afford to do that. She has good workouts, it was just a matter of confidence.
"Mindy started out first and finished strong. Audrey is learning that you cannot always rely on your kick at the end of the race, especially a big one like this."
Five of the teams that are ranked among the top 30 in this week's FinishLynx poll - No. 15 Boston College, No. 18 Michigan, No. 24 William & Mary, No. 28 Washington and No. 30 Yale - each finished behind the Hoosiers. While Indiana is pleased with this development, it is still far from the final goal.
"Thisi s great for the girls, a reward for their hard work, and they're having fun," she said. "At the same time, they know that this is just a poll, and what matters is how you do on the course. This is a good race that leads us into Big Tens."
