YPSILANTI, Mich. ----- The Indiana women's cross country team had three runners place in the top 20 to pace the 27th-ranked squad to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional held here Saturday afternoon. Sophomores Jessica Gall and Kristin Whitezell and junior Kelly Siefker led IU, as the trio finished in the top 20 and completed the 6,000m-event in under 21 minutes.

Gall paced the Hoosiers for a fourth time on the season, finishing in seventh overall with a time of 20:16.2. Whitezell was the next Hoosier to finish, coming in at 17th place in 20:51, just ahead of Siefker who placed 20th in a time of 20:55.5.

Gall, Whitezell and Sieker were named to the all-region team for their efforts.

"I feel the girls did really well," head coach Judy Wilson said. "I thought Lindsay (Hattendorf) and Larra (Overton) had much better races. I wanted them to place around 50th and be inbetween Ball State's third and fourth runners and they did pretty much just that. I think this was a good step for us."

Sophomore Lindsay Hattendorf ran in 51st with a time of 21:29.3, followed by junior Larra Overton who's time of 21:29.9 was good enough for 53rd. Rounding out the Hoosiers was senior Mindy Peterson (77th - 21:58.5) and Julie Shields (97th - 22:19.5).

No. 4 Michigan took the Regional, while U of M's Rebecca Walter won the event in a time of 20:01.4. Including the Hoosiers, the Big Ten showed well, with three of its teams finishing in the top five.

Only the top two teams at the regional receive automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, but Indiana is hoping to receive an at-large bid with their excellent showing at regionals. The NCAA Championship will be held Monday, Nov. 22, in Terre Haute, Ind, and at-large selections will be announced by 7 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 14).

"I feel our chances of making the NCAA Championship are pretty good," said Wilson. "It just depends on what happens in the other regionals."
