Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana women's cross country coach Judy Wilson recently sat down with iuhoosiers.com to preview Saturday's NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet in Terre Haute.
Please outline the three keys to your respective teams clinching an NCAA berth this Saturday?
"Well, we need a solid effort out of everyone. We need to be top six. It would be nice to beat Wisconsin and/or Marquette, but we absolutely have to beat Toledo and Ball State."
How big of an advantage is it to have so much racing experience in Terre Haute, especially in big meets?
"It's nice to have run the course before. We have Audrey (Giesler), Mindy (Peterson), and Kelly (Siefker) who ran at NCAA's last year, and Heidi (Crowley) and Julie (Shields) have run the 6k course before. Larra and Kristin won't have any problems adapting from the 5 k that they ran at the Intercollegiate meet."
How would you describe your team's overall disposition this week? Is it where you want it to be? If so, how do you get it there?
"We are ready to go. The entire team knows what we have to do to make the NCAA's and they all want to get back there. Heidi and Audrey have been through a lot of highs and lows with our program and personally, and it would be tremendous to have Heidi Crowley run in a national meet."
Based on training over the last few weeks as well as most recent competition, who is the runner to watch, or who are the runners to watch for your team this Saturday?
"Audrey has a very good shot at making the NCAA on her own. I think the entire team has done a great job with training over the last month. Kristin Whitezell looks much better than she has in a long time, and Julie has trained very well."
What is the No. 1 thing that your teams learned from last year's NCAA meet that could pay off this year?
That it is just a 6k race. You go out and run your best because you are running with the best in the country.
