    Basketball 1949-51...first black basketball player in the Big Ten...as a 6'2" center led IU to a 19-3 record and No. 2 national ranking in 1951...IU Most Valuable Player, All-Big Ten and All-American in 1951 season...led IU in scoring and rebounding three years...led Shelbyville to the Indiana state basketball championship in 1947 and coached Indianapolis Crispus Attucks to the state title in 1959.

    Diving 1967-70...won four Big Ten championships, five NCAA titles and 10 AAU indoor and outdoor championships on the one and three meter boards...regarded as the best one meter diver of all time and won 10 straight NCAA and AAU national championships on that board...won a bronze medal in the 1968 Olympic Games and in 1969 was ranked as the No. 1 springboard diver in the world.

    Football 1943-44...quarterback who in 1943 set an NCAA record that still stands, most total yards gained by a freshman, 458 against Nebraska...that is still an IU record as is the six touchdown passes he threw in that 54-13 win...led the NCAA in total offense in '43 while earning first team All-Big Ten and third team All-American honors...ranks ninth on IU's career list in total offense...later played at Navy, in the 1944 College All-Star game, and professionally with the champion Detroit Lions.

    Track 1932-34, co-captain 1934, cross country 1931-33, honorary captain 1933...won 10 Big Ten titles in the 880, mile and mile relay, an IU record for over half a century...won NCAA titles in the 880 in 1932, 1933 and 1934...two-time Olympian, placing seventh in Los Angeles in 1932 and fifth in Berlin in 1936 in the 800 meters...held NCAA record in the 800 meters, world record in the 600 meters...member of two Big Ten championship cross country teams and placed 11th when Hoosiers won AAU title in 1931...won 1934 Distinguished Alumni Service Award and has won Z.G. Clevenger Award.

    Served IU for over 50 years...the only person to have served IU as president, acting president and interim president in the 160-year history of IU...the first person to have the title University Chancellor...acting president in 1937, president from 1938 to 1962, interim president in 1968...became Chancellor in 1962...has more than two dozen degrees from colleges and universities around the world...1957 delegate to the General Assembly of the United Nations...holds 1924 B.S. degree and 1927 M.S. degree from IU...very instrumental in the development of the current-day athletic complex.
