Basketball 1973-76 and captain 1974 and 1976...football 1973-74...played on four Big Ten championship teams and helped lead 1976 team to NCAA title...IU's co-MVP in 1975, All-Big Ten in 1974 and 1975, All-American in 1975 and 1976...starter and captain of 1976 Olympic team which won gold medal...only person ever to play on championship teams in high school, college and professional levels and win gold medal in Olympics...led football team in interceptions two years.
Track and cross country coach 1944-62...led IU teams to Big Ten outdoor track championships in 1950 and 1957 and to Big Ten indoor crown in 1957 ...led IU to Big Ten cross country championship in 1946 and to NCAA second place finishes in 1952 and 1953...the only U.S. coach to produce two gold medal winners in track in the 1956 Olympic Games...assistant football coach at IU for four years and also coached football and track at North Central College for 19 years.
Basketball 1974-76...averaged 23.5 points on 1976 NCAA championship team...IU Most Valuable Player, All-Big Ten and All-American in 1975 and 1976, Big Ten Player of the Year in 1975 and 1976 and collegiate Player of the Year in 1976...set IU record with 752 points in 1976 season...started on 1976 U.S. Olympic team that won the gold medal...played professionally with three different teams.
Football 1932-34...IU's most valuable player in 1934, when he scored on an 82-yard run to help upset Purdue, 17-6...assistant football coach and tennis coach at IU in 1947...coached football at Florida State from 1948-52 with record of 30-12...coached golf at Florida State from 1953-82... won Clevenger Award in 1983...member of Florida State, Florida and Indiana Halls of Fame.
Cross country 1941...cross country team captain 1941...track 1941...won Big Ten and NCAA individual championships in cross country, IU's first individual winner...in track won Big Ten two mile indoor championship and NCAA outdoor two mile title...member of 1948 U.S. Olympic team, placing 11th in 10,000 meters, and 1952 Olympic team, placing 21st in the 10,000 meters...won Sullivan Award for nation's outside amateur athlete in 1950 ...set world indoor 2-mile record in 1952.
