1/7/2017 3:28:00 PM | Track and Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the second consecutive season, the IU men handled the Volunteers from Tennessee. IU was victorious with a score of 71.5-49.5. The women's team, who tied the Volunteers a season ago, won by a score of 65-53. This is just the third time in meet history that Indiana has swept.
"We feel that we have a group of very talented athletes," said head coach Ron Helmer. "We are continuing to develop our team and today was a great step in the right direction."
Eric Bethea won the triple jump with an NCAA-leading mark of 15.68m. Bethea landed inside the top 10 with that jump, ending in eighth. He moves just one spot behind 2016 Olympian, Olu Olamigoke. The sophomore also won the long jump with a 7.27m leap.
Kyle Mau used a huge late push to capture his second event victory of the afternoon in the men's 3,000m run. The sophomore won with a time of 8:35.90. Earlier in the day, Mau was able to outlast a couple of teammates in the mile to win with a time of 4:08.09.
The Hoosier women swept a handful of events, including the 400m dash, the 800m run, the mile run and the 3,000m run. Taylor Williams took first in the 400m dash with a time of 55.94. Kendell Wiles and Riley Egbula finished second and third, respectively. Mallory Mulzer earned her first collegiate win in the 800m run with a time of 2:14.79. Joely Pinkston and Olivia followed her for the sweep.
In the mile, Hippensteel emerged from the pack to win. Kelsey Harris and Corinne Cominator finished out the Hoosier sweep. In the 3,000m run, Maggie Allen surged to the lead with about four laps left and never looked back. Haley Harris and Chanli Mundy finished second and third.
Andrew Miller climbed up a spot in the all-time Hoosier weight throw standings after winning the event with a throw of 20.22m. Miller is now third on the list, just behind Patrick Onye (20.34m/66-8.75) and the current record holder Wasyl Fedoriw (20.86m/68-5.25). Willie Morrison and David Schall, again, finished 1-2 in the shot put competition.
Treyton Harris was all over the track. The sophomore finished first in the high jump, clearing 2.13m (6-11.5). Harris was the runner up in the long jump with a leap of 7.22m. Treyton just missed scoring in the 200m dash but was the fastest Hoosier runner, finishing fourth with a time of 21.95.
Adrian Mable led the way in the 60m hurdles, taking first with a time of 8.23. William Session took second in the event to score three points for the Hoosiers. Coopers Williams won his first college meet, taking down the field in the 800m run.
On the women's side, Danielle Quinn earned the victory in the triple jump, Taylor Pennington won the high jump and Rachel Mather took care of the pole vault.
Indiana will be back in action a week from today, January 14th. The Hoosiers will host in-state rival Purdue in a dual meet.
