BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The men's and women's cross country teams posted a strong start to the season as the men's and women's teams finished first at the Sam Bell Invitational Friday morning.
"We had a bunch of guys that had the opportunity to run unattached, so we tried to break them into teams to promote competition within that group," said assistant coach Andrew Poore. "It looked like the guys really embraced that. We had some freshmen that did a really nice job today in their first collegiate races showing they prepared well over the summer. They should be able to make significant contributions later into the season. It's encouraging that we have 3-4 new people that add valuable reinforcement to our men's cross country team."
When discussing the women's race Poore said, "it was an opportunity for all nine (runners) to feel like they had a contribution to make and compete hard for the first time of the year and really test where they're at. I thought they did a good job running controlled in the first loop (2K meters). They were really nice and packed up. We really encouraged them to push the second loop. Granted it was a whole lot cooler, but we had a bunch of women run a whole lot faster than a year ago. I thought we did a nice job of embracing competition across the board and took pride in being at home. They gave a really nice effort lining up for the first time to set the tone for the rest of the season."
The men ran the 6K race at the Sam Bell Cross Country Course led by redshirt junior Garrett Hicks. He finished seventh with a personal best time of 18:38.03.
Redshirt freshman Caden Click (18:43.95) and sophomore Aidan Lord (19:04.45) followed close behind. They each finished in new personal bests to place ninth and tenth, respectively.
Junior Andrew Mangum and redshirt freshman Matt Kim rounded out the Hoosiers finishing 13th and 14th respectively.
Redshirt senior Claire Overfelt led the way in the women's 4K race. She finished first in a time of 13:45.21. When asked about the race, she was, "feeling pretty good going up to 3K and just let it rip for the last part. My motivation was knowing that our course is probably the hardest course we will run on. So if I can be tough through this and push myself as hard as I can, then it will bode well later in the season when the races get faster and more competitive."
The Hoosiers swept the top seven spots with Lily Myers (2nd: 13:51.63), Joey Rastrelli (3rd: 13:56.54), Katelyn Winton (5th: 14:07.79), and Michaela Quinn (6th: 14:19.91) all running personal best times.
Freshmen Ava Jarrell (14:06.20) and Alayna Todnem (14:25.24) competed in their first collegiate races, placing fourth and seventh, respectively.
